Various democratic organizations staged a protest today outside DC Office Mohali

Various democratic organizations staged a protest today outside DC Office Mohali against the registration of false cases under section 295 and 295A in Punjab against rational and democratic activists on false charges of hurting religious sentiments with the intention of spreading communal hatred in Punjab.

A memorandum was sent to CM Punjab through DC Mohali, demanding the cancellation of all the registered cases. False cases are being registered against Tarksheel leader and intellectual Surjit Daudhar, Bhupinder Singh Fauzi, Davinder Rana, a common shopkeeper Iqbal Dhanaula and another Cristian girl Shaina. The organizations include Association for Democratic Rights, Punjab Unit Chandigarh/Mohali, Tarksheel Society Punjab Chandigarh Zone, Naujawan Bharat Sabha, Progressive Writers Association (Punjab), Punjab Students Union (Lalkar), Students for Society, AISA, RMPI, Varg Chetna Manch, Democratic Teachers Front , CPI-ML Liberation and Sahitya Chintan Chandigarh.

In the last few days, some rational and democratic people, who have scientific point of view, expressed their views on social media or media channels during interviews on the subject of inauguration of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya on 22 Jan, 2024 and false cases have been registered against them under section 295A by the Hindutva communal forces.

Cases have been registered against these persons by the police under pressure of the Hindutva mobs though, none of them have made any unscientific or fact less comments against Hinduism or the faith of its followers in their statements or written posts.

Expressing their views about the mythological story of Ramayana and the current politics related to the establishment of Ram temple is a matter of their constitutional right to speech and self-expression and any restriction on it is an attack on the right to speak. Two of these persons are honorable leaders of the Tarksheel Society Punjab, which has been spreading scientific thinking and awareness among common people against superstitions in Punjab for decades. Filing a case under a draconian law like Section 295A against such persons is an effort to strangulate these rational and scientific voices.

We believe that Article 295A itself is a law with colonial legacy and a provision made to suppress the freedom of expression and criticism and such law should have no place in a democratic, progressive and scientific society. Further, in the present time, it is being used by extremist religious and communal forces to suppress progressive ideas.

After the protest, a memorandum was sent to the Chief Minister Punjab through DC Mohali and the following demands were made:
1) The cases registered under section 295A against the above five persons should be quashed and their right to speak should be restored.
2) The use of Article 295A, which cripples the democracy should not be used against anyone in Punjab.
3) The central government should be demanded to abolish Article 295A completely as it is anti-democratic and against the freedom of self-expression.

Speakers include Advocate Mandeep from Association for Democratic Rights, Jaswant Mohali from Tarksheel Society Punjab, Inderjit Grewal from RMPI, Master Yashpal from Varg Chetna Manch, Sanjeevan from Progressive Writers Association, Joban from PSU (Lalkar), Manav from Naujwan Bharat Sabha, Gurpyaar Singh from Democratic Teachers Front, Sandeep from SFS, Kanwaljit from CPI-ML Liberation presented their views and supported the demands.
