Mohali Carnival: Punjab Sakhi Shakti Mela, Faces of women empowerment shine through entrepreneurial success

Mohali, (DPB) February 7:

Mohali Carnival–Punjab Sakhi Shakti Mela is emerging as a major platform for women entrepreneurs, many of whom began their journeys with household chores and are now successfully running small businesses and supporting their families financially.

The mela showcases inspiring stories of self-help groups (SHGs) from across Punjab. Hundreds of women visitors are not only purchasing products but also boosting the morale and confidence of these entrepreneurs.

Baljit Kaur of the Baljit Self Help Group from Kukrawala (Harsha Chhina, Amritsar) started manufacturing hair accessories such as rubber bands, hair clips, brooch pins and women’s clutches two years ago. Her group now has 11 members, most of whom earlier worked as domestic helpers. With basic education and skills learned through online videos, she has turned her initiative into a steady source of income while also supporting other women.

In another example, Amandeep Kaur, who leads the Khalsa Self Help Group from Ghallu village in Fazilka, began her venture four years ago with 11 women. Starting with hand embroidery work, the group now produces and sells ladies’ suits priced between Rs 2,500 and Rs 7,500. Along with group member Suman Lata, she is running a stall at the mela that is attracting a large number of customers.

Shero Rani of Masingan Self Help Group (Patiala) is showcasing products under the brand name “Sneha Phulkari.” Since 2021, the group has expanded its work to include embroidery, woollen weaving, jute bags and traditional phulkari items priced up to Rs 10,000. The SHG has connected 13 village groups and even operates an atta chakki, a drone service initiative and a regular sales counter.

Similarly, Aman Ajeevika Self Help Group and Amanjot Producer Group from Khizrabad (Kharar) led by Kamni Devi began in 2020. Despite having only matric-level education, she now coordinates 156 self-help groups across 10 nearby villages. Starting with pickles and spices, the group today offers a wide range of organic products at local markets and major events, with support from her family and hundreds of associated women.

Nodal Officer of the mela, Ms Sonam Chaudhary, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural Development), Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, said that the Mohali Carnival–Punjab Sakhi Shakti Mela is distinct from SARAS Mela. “This platform specifically promotes women self-help groups and small women entrepreneurs by providing them direct opportunities to sell their products, whereas SARAS Mela features artisans of both genders,” she said.

She added that the carnival has been organised for the first time and has received an encouraging response from the public. The mela will continue till February 10 and will feature daily cultural performances, including musical nights by renowned singers.
