400 Students, Just 4 Classrooms at Landran Government School; Safety, Mid-Day Meal Issues Raised

Former Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi visits school, seeks intervention from Chief Minister and Education Minister

DP, MOHALI, OCTOBER 16 : Questions have been raised over the condition of the Government Primary School in Landran, where around 400 students are reportedly studying in just four classrooms. Former Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi visited the school and highlighted the alleged shortage of classrooms, safety concerns and lack of basic facilities. He said 12 teachers were working with only four classrooms, forcing two classes to be accommodated in a single room.

Bedi said the Punjab government had been claiming to bring major reforms in education and transform government schools into smart schools, but the situation at the Landran school raised questions over these claims. He alleged that the school did not have adequate space for children to play, despite sports and physical activities being essential for their overall development.

He also expressed concern over the narrow staircase and the main entrance. According to Bedi, the staircase was too narrow considering the number of children studying at the school, and adequate safety arrangements were needed to prevent accidents. He apprehended that a child could slip or fall after being pushed on the stairs. He further claimed that the main entrance was approximately three feet wide, which could cause difficulties for children while entering or leaving the premises.

Raising another concern, Bedi said the school had only two bathrooms for the large number of students and staff. He also claimed that the school had not received the required funds for the Mid-Day Meal scheme for the past four months. He demanded an immediate inquiry into the matter, saying it concerned the meals provided to children and the daily functioning of the school.

Describing Landran as an important and rapidly developing area of Mohali district, Bedi said the alleged shortage of basic facilities at a government school in the area was a matter of concern. He urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Education Minister to visit the school and assess the situation on the ground instead of relying on advertisements and publicity.

Bedi demanded that the government provide adequate classrooms, improve basic facilities, ensure the safe movement of children within the school premises and release Mid-Day Meal funds on time. He said government schools should be assessed on the basis of the facilities available to students, the safety of their buildings and the quality of education being provided.
