Arshdeep S Kler demands immediate arrest of the minister
Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today asked Punjab Police chief Gaurav Yadav to tell Punjabis why the force was shielding education minister Harjot Bains and not arresting him after the latter was named as the main accused in an abetment to suicide case involving 1158 Assistant Professors and Librarian Front teacher Dr Balwinder Kaur.
Addressing a press conference here, SAD legal wing president Arshdeep Singh Kler also asked the DGP to clarify why the Punjab Police had initially tried to hide the suicide note written by Dr Balwinder Kaur. He said the police also owed an explanation as to why it registered a case against the husband and father in law of the victim even though the teacher had made it clear that they were not involved in any wrongdoing and that Harjot Bains alone was responsible for her death. “It is clear that the Ropar police have not acted in a professional manner under pressure from the minister. This needs to be probed and all those who have failed to conduct their duties professionally should be proceeded against as per law”.
Mr Kler said the Ropar police had registered a case against the family of the victim immediately after her suicide note was found. He said since the body of the victim was not found till October 23, only a missing persons case could have been registered till then. “However when the body of the teacher was recovered on October 23 the police was duty bound to register a case against the education minister and arrest him”. He said it was condemnable that the police had failed to take action in the matter till now despite written assurances that it would act as per law.
The SAD leader while demanding justice for Dr Balwinder Kaur, said the victims immediate family had also taken back its statement against the teacher’s in-laws and now the police should proceed against Bains immediately. He said in case the Ropar police failed to act in the matter even now the SAD would broadbase its struggle to ensure justice for Dr Balwinder Kaur. EOM
