Reviving the Timeless Elegance of Phulkari: Women Entrepreneurs Shine at CII Chandigarh Fair 2023

Chandigarh: The CII Chandigarh Fair 2023 this year, brings to the forefront the traditional craft of Phulkari, a timeless embroidery technique from Punjab that has captured hearts worldwide. The fair became a stage for women entrepreneurs, champions of this art form, who have devoted their lives to preserving and promoting Phulkari, empowering women through their craft.

“Patiala Handicraft” is the embodiment of this vision. Founded by Rekha Maan from Patiala, it’s not just a business; it’s a beacon of empowerment. Recipient of the Phulkari national award, Rekha Maan has stayed true to the cause of uplifting rural women and has provided employment and introduced bank account facilities to 2500 such women, enabling them to find self-employment and self-worth. Through training programs and workshops, Rekha ensures the heritage of Phulkari thrives in the modern world.

72-year-old Bhajan Kaur, originally from Patiala and now residing in Kharar, continues the legacy of Phulkari – her lifelong love – that she started learning in her teenage years from her grandmother through “Worldwide Phulkari”. Her story is one of passion and familial support. Her stall at the fair is a homage to the artisans before her and an invitation to embrace the past.

Hailing from Patiala and representing “Punjab Industrial Department”, Seema Rani learned the craft from her mother, kindling the flame of tradition. What makes her journey remarkable is her indomitable spirit; Seema Rani is physically disabled. Yet, with the support of NHDFC, she secured a loan to kick-start her business. The products she showcases, including suits, dupattas, sarees, cushion covers, runners, and tablecloths, are a testament to her mastery. She offers both handmade and machine-made Phulkaris, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Beyond the fair, she runs self-help groups in Lalru, Chandigarh, demonstrating the inclusivity and reach of Phulkari.

Each exhibitor at the CII Chandigarh Fair 2023 is a guardian of a legacy and a pioneer in their right. Their journey, woven into the vibrant tapestry of Phulkari, reminds us that the beauty of tradition lies in its enduring spirit. Explore their stalls and become part of this age-old narrative.
