NAWANSHAHR: On the call of Samyukt Kisan Morcha to hold protests across Punjab from 12 noon to 2 pm in protest against the brutal police lathicharge on farmers in Karnal in Haryana yesterday, farmers of the district held protests at two places here today.
While farmers under the banner of Kirti Kisan Union held a protest and resorted to traffic jam in front of Reliance Superstore on Chandigarh Road here, farmers led by Doaba Kisan Union blocked traffic for sometime on national highway in front of Bhagat Singh’s memorial at Khatkar Kalan. At Khatkar Kalan, farmers did not allow vehicles of SAD and BSP activists who were going to participate in the rally being held at Phagwara, to proceed further and the police had to send them back on some diverted route through villages.
At Khatkar Kalan, farmers could be seen raising slogans against these( SAD-BSP) parties also, besides shaming and asking their activists to wear bangles for their failure to come out in support of protesting farmers. Surinder Bains, district president of KKU, said that today’s protests were held at a very short notice and they would be resorting to much larger protests in the coming days against the Modi and Khattar governments. Their fight would continue till the repeal of farm laws, besides acceptance of their other demands, he reiterated.
