Punjab to Post Women Employees Within 40 km of Home: CM Mann
In a significant employee welfare measure, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday announced that women government employees belonging to Group C and D categories will be posted within a maximum radius of 40 kilometres from their homes after completing their probation period.
The decision is expected to benefit thousands of women employees across the state, including staff nurses, teachers, women police personnel and other eligible workers. Calling it a landmark step towards improving work-life balance, Mann said the government has already initiated the process of framing a policy for its implementation.
Addressing a gathering in Mohali, the Chief Minister said many women employees had shared their difficulties regarding postings far away from their families. “I have personally interacted with several women employees who told me that they are posted nearly 200 kilometres away from their homes. Because of this, they are able to meet their families only once or twice a week and face immense hardships,” he said.

Mann added that the proposed policy aims to make government service more employee-friendly while ensuring better productivity and family support. “Women employees, including staff nurses, teachers and women police personnel, will be posted within a maximum radius of 40 kilometres from their homes after completing probation,” he said.
Explaining the policy further, the Chief Minister said women employees would be allowed to choose either their parental home or marital home as the reference address while filling official records. “The idea is to ensure that they can reach their families within about an hour. A happy employee always performs better. Forty kilometres is only the upper limit, and postings can be much closer—15 or 20 kilometres wherever possible,” he added.
Describing the initiative as part of the AAP government’s commitment towards employee welfare, Mann said the concerns raised by government employees have played a key role in shaping policy decisions. “Employees have always openly shared their problems with us, and we are committed to finding practical solutions that improve their lives,” he said.
Officials have been directed to prepare the implementation framework, and the policy is expected to benefit thousands of women employees serving in various departments across Punjab.
